Jim Lauchlan training for new career as referee

Former Dundee and Dundee United defender Jim Lauchlan is to pursue his goal of becoming a referee.

Lauchlan, who was released by the Dark Blues in the summer, is taking an SFA course to become a match official and will take charge of his first amateur game in the new year.

Currently playing in the Republic of Ireland with Sligo Rovers, he has been keeping tabs on events in the SPL as Dougie McDonald, Steven Craven, Willie Collum and refs' supervisor Hugh Dallas have been caught up in the storms surrounding United's defeat to Celtic last month and the recent Old Firm game.

Even though referees have attracted unprecedented criticism in the last few weeks, the 33-year-old Glaswegian won't be deterred from picking up his whistle.

"I know there has been a lot of controversy and referees have been getting a fair amount of stick recently," said Lauchlan. "However, it is still something I am fully focused on, so it hasn't put me off in the slightest.

"Some people laughed when I said I was going to become a referee, but that doesn't bother me. I would ideally love to become a manager or a coach when I hang up my boots some time in the future, but if that is not possible then the next best thing in my mind would be to referee.

"Being the man in the middle in an Old Firm game, for example, would be an amazing experience. It certainly can't be an easy job having to make split-second decisions in that kind of environment. Everyone knows that comes with the territory and it is precisely the sort of challenge that attracts me to the job.

"I have always just loved the game of football since I was a child, so when I do stop playing I will miss that buzz.

"My plan is to give refereeing my best shot and hopefully have a successful career in it. I am under no illusions, and it won't be easy, but I am ready for it."

Lauchlan has been mentored by grade one official Steve O'Reilly and hopes that if he makes the breakthrough it will encourage more ex-players to consider a career officiating.

"Stevie has been absolutely brilliant with me throughout the course, giving me as much support as I have needed," added Lauchlan. "I would like to think that my doing the course will encourage others who have played the game to do likewise.

"When you have been involved in football it can only help as far as making tough decisions go."

Scottish referees vote for strike action

Fixtures in Scotland face possible postponement next weekend with Category One referees voting to strike.

Scottish match officials are upset with the avalanche of criticism that has come their way this season.

The decision to take strike action was reached at a referees' union meeting held on Sunday afternoon.

There are four top flight fixtures scheduled for next Saturday, with two more on Sunday. There is also a full card in the Scottish Football League.

The ALBA Challenge Cup final between Queen of the South and Ross County at McDiarmid Park is also under threat, as will any Scottish Cup replays.

BBC Scotland has learned that officials are concerned that their integrity is constantly being questioned and there are increasing fears over personal safety as a result of public criticism from managers and the media.

Scottish Premier League referees threatened to strike over pay in 2008 but the threat was lifted when a review was set up to study their wage demands.

Last month, Hamilton manager Billy Reid warned that he would understand if referees were to refuse to officiate because of the excessive criticism directed at them.

The Scottish Football Association are not commenting on the matter, with a spokesman saying they have not had any official notification of the planned strike.

Hugh Dallas leaves post at SFA

STV Sport understands tonight that Hugh Dallas has left his position as Head of Referee development at the SFA.

The former Grade One Fifa World Cup referee has cited 'family reasons' as the reason for his departure and further statements from both the SFA and Dallas himself are expected soon.

Dallas had been at the centre of an internal investigation after reports that the Head of Referee Development had forwarded an offensive e-mail about the Pope from his SFA account.

The scandal had lead to calls from the Catholic Church for Dallas to resign from his post immediatly. In a letter sent directly to the Scottish Football Association's (SFA) chief executive Stewart Regan, director of the Scottish Catholic Media Office Peter Kearney stated:

"I am writing to you to express my concern at an allegation made recently against a senior official of the SFA, Mr Hugh Dallas, the Head of Referee development.

"He has been accused of sending an email from his SFA email account on the day of the Pope’s visit to Scotland, which was totally unprofessional, gratuitously insulting to the Pope, deeply offensive to the Catholic community of Scotland, and an incitement to anti-Catholic sectarianism.

"You will no doubt be well aware of the matter and I do appreciate it is one which is rightly the responsibility of the SFA. I understand that an internal investigation has been launched by the SFA into the allegation.

"However in view of the alleged content of the email it is clearly a matter of some concern to the Catholic church in Scotland. Accordingly, I would welcome your confirmation of the following:

"That once concluded the results of this investigation will be made public.

"The SFA will treat the matter with some urgency in order to maintain the Association’s integrity and credibility in opposing sectarianism.

"Should the allegation be proved against Mr Dallas he will be removed from his post."
